Instructors Grant Goodall

Education: Ph.D. in Linguistics from University of California, San Diego. B.A. (summa cum laude) in linguistics from UCLA.  Also studied at MIT and at the National University of Mexico.  Completed advanced Esperanto studies under William Auld at SFSU.

Professional Experience: Professor of Linguistics, University of Texas at El Paso. Has taught Spanish, English as a second language, Chinese, and Esperanto.  In 1996 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Geneva.

Esperanto Experience: Assisted Professor James Cool (1979) and Professor Claude Piron (1981) and in 1990 directed the SFSU summer courses.  Former acting director of the ELNA Central Office.  Developed Esperanto independent study courses for University of California.  Invited lecturer at World Esperanto Youth Conference in Mexico (1981).

Publications: Numerous publications in linguistics, including two books, articles, chapters in books, reviews and papers presented.

Spomenka Sxtimec

Education:German/French major, University of Zagreb

Esperanto Experience: Employed at International Cultural Service, Zagreb; secretary of International Puppet Festival; secretary of International Esperanto Youth conventions in Sarajevo and in Münster, Germany; research at the Cybernetics Institute, University of Paderborn, Germany; worked at the Esperanto Institute at Dankook University, Seoul, Korea; lecture tour of Japan; taught Esperanto at University of Hartford (1993-94); co-winner of the 1994 prize FAME (with Heroldo de Esperanto) for contributions to Esperanto culture.

Publications: Novel, Ombro sur interna pejzagxo; short stories, Vojagxo al disigxo, Kroata milita notlibro, Geografio de miaj memoroj, Tena - Hejmo en Mezeuxropo; travelogue, Nesenditaj leteroj el Japanio; drama, Gastamo, and Virino kiu flustris en uragano.

Dennis Keefe

Education: MBA University of Illinois in 1993. MA English as a Second Language in 1991.

Professional Experience: Director of VIIPP MBA program at University of Illinois, Urbana; Director and teacher of ESL program, Université François Rabelais in Tours, France; taught English at Berlitz, the English School in Madrid, Valencia, Spain. Founder of the Festival of Languages Linguafest and founder of an internet site for free university business courses.

Esperanto Experience: Taught Esperanto several years at Château de Grésillon, France.

Publications: BEKkurso complete four-level, four-skills, multi-syallabus course for learning Esperanto (1982-1994). Six manuals in total.

Reza Kheir-khah

Education: Bachelor of Science in English translation from the College of Translation (now Allameh Tabatabai University) in Tehran, 1983.

Professional Experience: Secretary of International Relations at the International Institute of Preventive Medicine in Tokyo. Passed training courses in the UEA office in Rotterdam; proofreader of Monato for Flemish Esperanto League in Belgium; journalist for Et-tela-at publications in Tehran.

Esperanto Experience: Esperantigxis in 1980 in Iran. Taught Esperanto courses there and arranged an Esperanto Correspondence in Javanan magazine. Traveled through China, Japan, and Korea promoting Esperanto and teaching classes. Has taught Esperanto classes around Tokyo and recently in Shikoku.

ESP 594 Beginning Esperanto (3 units)

WELCOME TO ESPERANTO

Specific training in standard spoken and written Esperanto for students new to the language. Discussion of the long-term goals of Esperanto and how the language is used for international communication, including travel and education. A basis for continued independent study and an adequate background for teachers intending to introduce Esperanto in elementary school enrichment programs. Registration fee: $450.

ESP 595 Intermediate Esperanto I (3 units)

GAINING CONFIDENCE IN ESPERANTO

For those who have made an initial study of Esperanto. The course is conducted in Esperanto and stresses conversational ability while including a systematic review of structure and vocabulary. Students will role-play situations they would encounter at international meetings of Esperanto speakers and in Esperanto-speaking homes. Registration fee: $450.

ESP 596 Intermediate Esperanto II (3 units)

LEARNING AND TEACHING ESPERANTO

For students with the ability to understand and participate in class sessions conducted entirely in Esperanto. A broad range of communicative activities will be used to develop language skills and proficiency. The materials and approaches give prospective and practicing teachers an abundance of models, techniques, and materials to enliven their own teaching. Review and practice with focus on effective learning of pronunciation, structure, and the cultural tradition of Esperanto. Registration fee: $450.

ESP 597 Advanced Esperanto (3 units)

EXPLORING THE SOCIAL ASPECTS OF ESPERANTO

This course challenges advanced students to deepen and broaden their knowledge of the social and cultural realities of Esperanto. Among the topics covered will be European and non-European influences on Esperanto, the diversity of local Esperanto movements around the world, Esperanto ideologies and their relationship to modernity and postmodernity, and the indigenous literature of the Esperanto community. Registration fee: $450.
SFSU Student Fellowship Fund

The SFSU Student Fellowship Fund of the Esperanto League for North America can provide partial financial support for needy students in the program. Clubs and individuals are invited to recommend students for advanced studies. Interested students should write in Esperanto, giving their Esperanto histories (study, teaching, and club activity) to Ellen Eddy.

Additional Activities

Classes are planned for evening Esperanto programs, including group singing, folk dancing, slide shows, practice in public speaking, special presentations of interest to teachers, and a variety of topics dealing with Esperanto language and culture. Reza Kheir-Khah will guide the popular conversation groups. The schedule of these non-credit activities will be announced in class.
