The organization I.L.E.R.A. was founded during the Universala Kongreso (worldwide Esperanto Congress) in 1970, by 14 Hams. The translated history is available for your information. There are over 350 ILERA members around the world. Many of these stations normally take part in scheduled nets and regularly operate on set frequencies, +/- QRM, but there are also packet radio and Internet resources for ILERA members to use.

The ILERA members attending the World Congress normally try to operate a Special Events commemorative station during the week-long meeting. During some years, (1995, in Tampere, Finland, for example) the local contest club set up the station, and staffed it 24 hours a day that week. You can find more information about the commemorative stations on the history page.

There is a Fall Contest, where ILERA members try to make as many contacts in Esperanto as they can, but they can also get credit for other contacts if they mention Esperanto during the contact. Unfortunately, in the USA, there is usually another contest going on, and US Hams may have trouble contacting the ILERA hams (but keep trying!). And all year long, anyone can make contact with ILERA members, and apply for the Diploma based on the number of stations they have spoken to on the air.

The group has had nearly 600 members during the 33-year history. There were more than 350 active members, as of the 1996 U.K. which met in Prague, Czech Republic.

There is one general meeting held annually at the Universala Kongreso, which travels around the world. We have some photos from the 83rd world congress, held in Montpellier, France, just weeks after the World Cup (soccer championships) had played there. The 84th world congress took place in Berlin, Germany, in August of 1999. The 85th world congress was held in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the end of July in 2000. The 86th world congress was held in ____.
